SAGE Lab Research Featured: Exercise Intensity Proves Crucial for Sleep Quality in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment
A new study by SAGE Lab researchers Jungjoo Lee and Dr. Junhyoung "Paul" Kim has been highlighted in SleepWorld Magazine, shedding light on the critical relationship between physical activity and sleep quality among older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Published in the journal Digital Health, the research marks a significant methodological shift from traditional, easily biased self-surveys by tracking participants' daily movements and sleep patterns using objective biometric data from Oura smart rings.
The research team discovered that when it comes to combating restless sleep, exercise intensity matters immensely. The data revealed that high-intensity or vigorous exercise provides the most substantial benefits; for every additional second of vigorous activity, sleep disruptions dropped by approximately 0.2 seconds. While light physical activity offered mild improvements, moderate exercise showed no statistically significant impact on reducing sleep disturbances. With the U.S. population facing MCI projected to surge by 76% by 2060, this study by Jungjoo Lee and Dr. Kim strongly advocates for designing and implementing structured, intensity-specific physical programs to enhance the overall quality of life for aging populations.
